New PS3 firmware: PS3 data transfer

It finally appears that Sony has listened and with the upcoming 3.15 firmware will support PS3 data transfer. This feature enables you to transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3.

Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system. This is good news for the 60GB PS3-owners as those consoles seem to very quickly die now.

Update (2009-12-12): The firmware update is now live – you can download it here.

I WAS WRONG: The transfer-utility allows only to copy content via ethernet – WTF Sony? I was hoping for a transfer via USB.

Synology releases firmware supporting DNLA

Although still in beta, the new firmware sounds promising. I installed the beta-firmware yesterday and have not noticed anything not working. Surprisingly network transfer is faster (I attribute this to a new version of Samba).

The new Media Server supports many more video formats (ISO, MKV, M4V, MOV etc) and Apple users will be excited about the out-of-the box Time Machine support.

A full list of the new features after the break. Continue reading “Synology releases firmware supporting DNLA” »

Harmony advanced remote software update

I missed that Logitech released the latest version (7.6) of their Harmony remote software for the Mac.

I have not updated my Harmony 895 and remote extender in a while (must have been 6 months) and did notice that the firmware on both was bumped up (probably to support the PS3 bluetooth remote extender). This was also the first time, that I was able to update the firmware and settings without a glitch (no more safe-mode requirement on the remotes)

PS3: Get the latest firmware

My Synology NAS is really versatile and fulfills the most mundane tasks. At this point in time the NAS serves up my iTunes, streams HD-movies to the PS3, has all my software stored centrally, is used as an iPhoto server, manages my backups, acts as a Squid-caching server and now manages the PS3 firmware.

A rainy weekend and the realisation that my Perl skills totally suck, have eventually made me create a small application which produces the following:

Yes, a history of the latest PS3 firmwares. After having installed my Squid-proxy server, I noticed the traffic coming from the PS3. One of the URLs was quite interesting: http://fuk01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/list/uk/ps3-updatelist.txt. When you open the URL you will see a text-file describing the latest firmware version as well as the download link.

It was (relatively) easy to write a shell-script which downloads the update-file, then checks if a new firmware was released and if so, it will download the file and then notify you via an email of it. If your NAS or Linux server runs HTTP, I have included a simple Perl-script which lists all the firmwares and allows you to download them.

You add the PS3-firmware checker to a crontab and by the time you check your email, you will be notified that the latest firmware has been downloaded already.

Of course, if you would like to have the same cool functionality, use Paypal below, donate anything you like and get the download instantly (remember: you need wget, perl and the knowledge of a text-editor to adjust a few settings in the script):

Belkin N1 Vision – new firmware

My Belkin N1 Vision (F5D8232uk4) gigabit router has served me well in the past, and although I would next time rather go with a Netgear or Linksys, the choice was made due to it’s gigabit ports (at the time of purchase there was no wireless router available with those features).

Over the weekend I updated my F5D8232uk4-version 1 router to the latest pre-release firmware (v1.00.16) which resolves the following issues:
- General improvements in performance and stability
- Fix for a problem where the router would drop some connections on 2-hour intervals
- Updated driver for the Wireless Network card

Unlike other users, I must have been lucky, since I have not experienced any issues and would not be able to tell a difference after applying the latest firmware.

PS3 2.20 firmware brings Blue-ray profile 2.0

Sony released 2.20 firmware today which includes Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (known as “BD-LIVE”) Internet features and allow you to copy music and photos directly from PS3 to PSP.

BD-LIVE adds interactive features to films, like downloadable bonus scenes, shorts, trailers, subtitles, ringtones that can be sent to mobile phones, and images, as well as interactive movie-based games with online features.

Other features included:

  • Photos and music playlists can be copied directly from PS3 to PSP so you can listen to and view stuff on the go.
  • A new “Resume play” option will enable PS3 to start Blu-rays or DVDs at the point they were stopped, even if the disc was removed.
  • “Audio Output Device” will be a new Remote Play setting, so you can use the PSP as a remote control for music playing on PS3.
  • “Mosquito Noise Reduction” as an AV setting.
  • The Internet browser will allow for streaming video and view webpages more quickly, so hopefully no more sitting around waiting for those pictures of Heidi Montag to download from The Superficial.
  • Support for DivX and WMV videos larger than 2GB. All above board, we’re sure.
